A useful mandate defines the target asset or business, preferred ticket size, return expectations, control requirements, timetable and non-negotiable risks. It also identifies who may make decisions and which evidence is required at each stage.
Without these parameters, investors receive long lists of loosely relevant opportunities. With them, the search becomes selective and the advisory work becomes accountable.
The mandate should evolve as market evidence develops, but it should not become so flexible that every available opportunity appears suitable.
